ABOUT US

The Hong Kong-Australia Business Association Limited (HKABA), initiated by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, was established in 1987 aiming to promote a positive image for Hong Kong and to reinforce economic ties between Hong Kong SAR/China and Australia. Members are local businessmen with strong Hong Kong connections or those interested in doing business with Hong Kong and Hong Kong organizations based in Australia. The Association provides networking opportunities on which strong trading and investment links are built between Hong Kong companies and Australian companies. It also provides an effective channel of communications for information on economic development and trade opportunities in Hong Kong SAR/China.

The dramatic growth over the last half century in the dynamic two-way flow of commerce between Hong Kong and Australia marks an inspiring achievement of co-operation and promotion by business and Government on both sides. The HKABA fills a pivotal role in this two-way flow. In spreading awareness of the business opportunities in each country, and providing promotional guidance and support, it has contributed significantly in maximizing the economic benefit to both countries. I have been privileged to play some part in the professional aspects of this commerce and have seen at first hand the benefit of the HKABA’s work. I am proud to have been invited to participate as its Patron and I look forward to assisting in promoting its important and exciting activities in the future.

Sir Laurence is a Companion of the Order of Australia, a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George, a Knight of St John and a Grand Officer of Merit of the Order of Malta. He is an Honours Graduate in Law from Sydney University and has three Honorary Doctorates in Law and an Honorary Doctorate in Economics from Australian Universities. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK), an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators Australia and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

The Hong Kong Australia Business Association (HKABA) was established by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council in 1987 to promote and strengthen economic ties between Hong Kong SAR / China and Australia. Ms Shek has extensive marketing, business development and management experience in Asia/Pacific. Before joining the HKTDC, she spent over ten years in the telecommunications industry, being responsible for developing marketing strategy and leading the Asia/Pacific consumer team.

Having grown up in Hong Kong, then living in Australia for the last 24 years, Ms Shek understands the business dynamics in both places. Based in Sydney, she leads the team to assist small and medium-sized enterprises in doing business in Hong Kong/China and further enhance the good trading relationship between Hong Kong and the Australasian region.

From time to time, Ms Shek speaks at seminars and workshops educating businesses on how they can use Hong Kong as a gateway to China and the rest of Asia.

Ms Shek holds a MBA (Executive) degree from the Australian Graduate School of Management and a Bachelor of Business degree from the University of Technology, Sydney. She is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the National Treasurer/Secretary of the Hong Kong Australia Business Association.

OUR MISSION

  • To promote global co-operation, communication exchange and synergy among the Hong Kong business associations worldwide.

  • To provide a unified global voice that will enhance business and investment opportunities in and through Hong Kong.

The Federation of Hong Kong Business Associations Worldwide is a unique network of 41 Hong Kong Business Associations in 30 countries and regions with over 13,000 individual associates.

These Hong Kong Business Associations were started by overseas traders, buyers and professionals, who have strong business links to Hong Kong in their respective countries, for the purpose of networking and exchanging of business information and ideas. Each of these Associations has their own individual members who are top business people and SMEs in their home country. They are Hong Kong’s closest allies and partners in the world market.

With the help of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) , these Associations formed the Federation of Hong Kong Business Associations Worldwide in November 2000. The Federation aims to achieve synergy among the global network of Hong Kong Business Associations. Mr Hieu Van Le 黎文孝

His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le

Governor of South Australia 南澳州總督

His Excellency was born in Central Vietnam in 1954, where he attended school before studying Economics at the Dalat University in the Highlands.

Following the end of the Vietnam War, His Excellency, and his wife, Lan, left Vietnam in a boat in 1977.  Travelling via Malaysia, they were one of the early groups of Vietnamese refugees to arrive in Darwin Harbour.  His Excellency and Mrs Le soon settled in Adelaide, starting with three months at the Pennington Migrant Hostel.

As his Tertiary study in Vietnam was not recognised in Australia, the Governor returned to study at the University of Adelaide, where he earned a degree in Economics and Accounting within a short number of years.   In 2001, His Excellency’s further study earned him a Master of Business Administration from the same university.

His Excellency gained Certified Practising Accountant accreditation, and from 1991 worked at the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, where he led many high-profile matters. Upon his retirement from the Commission in March 2009, he held the position of Senior Manager – Financial Services Regulation.

His Excellency has served on many community boards and committees, in particular those relating to cultural and linguistic diversity, the arts and education.

In 1995 Mr Le was appointed a member to the SA Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission, and was appointed Deputy Chairman in 2001.  When His Excellency became Chairman in 2007, he was first person of Asian background to be Chairman.  His Excellency resigned from the Commission in August 2014.

In August 2007, His Excellency was sworn in as the Lieutenant Governor of South Australia.  Over the next seven years in this role, His Excellency served as the Patron or Honorary member of more than thirty organisations.

On 1 September 2014, His Excellency was sworn in as Governor of South Australia.

It is understood that His Excellency is the first Vietnamese-born person who has ever been appointed to a Vice-Regal position in the world.

His Excellency was awarded the Australia Day Medal in 1996 for outstanding service to Australian Securities and Investment Commission, and has been awarded the Centenary of Federation Medal for service to the advancement of multiculturalism.

On Australia Day 2010, His Excellency was appointed as an Officer in the Order of Australia for service to the community in South Australia.  He has also been awarded an Honorary Doctorate from both Adelaide University and Flinders University.

His Excellency is married to Mrs Lan Le, with whom he has two adult sons, Don and Kim.

Dr Roger Sexton

Dr Roger Sexton is a leading investment banker and company director with extensive professional experience in the Asia Pacific region.

Roger has served as a Chief Executive of a number of large organizations in the finance, funds management and investment banking industries and has served on the Boards of a number of public companies and organizations in Australia and overseas.

After spending the first 14 years of his working career in high level public service roles for both the South Australian State Government and the Commonwealth Government of Australia, Roger transferred his focus to the private sector in 1985 holding Executive Director roles at Morgan Grenfell Australia Limited and then Beneficial Finance Corporation before founding the Beston Pacific Group in 1992.

Roger established the Beston Pacific Group as a boutique investment bank focusing on corporate advisory and structured finance transactions in the Asia Pacific region. Under Roger’s guidance, the Beston Pacific Group has founded a number of significant investment trusts including the Beston Wine Industry Trust which was at the time the largest owner of vineyards in Australia and New Zealand. The management of this Trust was subsequently sold to the Challenger Financial group in 1999. He also founded the Beston Parks Accommodation Trust, the largest owner/operator of caravan parks in Australia.

Roger is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a Senior Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australia and a Member of the Australian Accounting Standards Board. Roger is accredited with the Australian Institute of Management as a Certified Practice Manager.

Mr. Francis Wong OAM 黄奇渊

HKABA-SA Chapter Adviser

Francis Wong is a prominent figure in marketing Australia as the tourism and business destination. He is well known as an accomplished leader as well as a spokesperson for the Asian Inbound Tourism Industry in Australia and is one of the Business Ambassadors for South Australia appointed by the South Australia Government. He also sits on the peak national tourism body, Australian Tourism Export Council as a board member, Chair the Asian Tourism Industry Advisory Panel. He is also an Area Councillor for Adelaide City Council.

He migrated from Brunei Darussalam in 1988 to establish Encounter Australia Pty Ltd., which is now one of the leading and most awarded national Inbound Tourism companies in Australia. He also co-managed a successful outbound travel company trading as Lai Lai Travel.

His other business interests are Endeavour Australia Pty Ltd, a firm specializing in promoting trade, projects development and marketing between Australia and Asia, Top 8 Wines Pty Ltd, a premium wine exporting business and BBX Adelaide, a barter business to business exchange.

Francis Wong’s positive attitude and entrepreneurial style has won respect in Australia and Asia. His experience in various industries in Australia, coupled with his influential network within the governments and private enterprise has brought many rewards to the Australian tourism industry and communities. This has also led to him being awarded the Council for International Trade and Commerce of South Australia (CITCSA) International Business Ambassador for 3 consecutive years, 2002, 2003 and 2004. In 2005, he was awarded as CITCSA Life Business Ambassador.

In 1998, he was appointed by the Australian Federal Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs to serve on the Business Advisory Panel, advising the Minister and the Department on the national skill migration policy.

In 2003, he is the first Asian in Australia to receive the prestigious national award – ‘Most Outstanding Contributing by an Individual to the Australian Tourism Export

Francis Wong understands the importance of keeping abreast both the domestic and international market environment. His ability of understanding the value of capitalizing on networks has brought many rewards to the Business, Tourism and Multicultural community of South Australia and Australia.

Wayne Chao

Wayne Chao is the founder and director of several companies focused on facilitating cultural and business ties between Australia and China.

Toward the end of his Computer Science degree at the University of Adelaide in 2006, he produced Flying Ostrich, a Chinese play which drew an audience of 500. The experience allowed him to grasp the vast needs of the Chinese community in Adelaide and became a launching pad for him to establish SA’s leading Chinese media company, iAge Media Group, in 2007.

In 2013, he cofounded Simway Consulting. This specialist investment consultancy provides business intelligence and government relations services in the Australia-China space, and has been instrumental in facilitating transactions between various government bodies and business groups.

In 2015, he established an industrial investment company AWTE Enterprise Pty Ltd with his business partners. The company has invested in Harbour Bottling Pty Ltd, an Australian wine bottling and exporting business which aims to provide a comprehensive export service platform, including wine production, packaging, warehousing and exporting services to help local wineries and exporters deliver their products overseas.

His passion for building bridges between people and communities drives his involvement in several groups. He is:

Attilio has been in the real estate industry since 1997 and has followed family tradition with his father being a prominent real estate agent in the Western Suburbs for over 20 years. Ian Mathison

Ian joined HKABA as a Committee member when the SA Chapter was reformed in 1991, during his business career with Cathay Pacific Airways in the Adelaide Office.

After five years in Perth as Manager Sales, Western Australia from 1997, Ian retired from Cathay Pacific and returned to Adelaide in 2002.

Cathay Pacific Airways and HKABA have enjoyed close links with state offices represented in the membership records from 1987.

In 2005, HKABA-SA President Victor Moo invited Ian to re-join the Chapter committee to assist with membership development and administration support.

After a 3 Year absence Ian is once again participating in the committee to support the organisation rebuild its profile in 2016.

Victoria is the Project Manager for Minter Ellison’s China Practice in South Australia and Northern Territory and has been with Minter Ellison for almost nine years. She works closely and actively with Chinese and Australian investors in the operation of their businesses in the minerals, energy, agricultural, manufacturing and real-estate sectors and has been involved in the successful listing of a number of Chinese companies on ASX.

She is experienced in matching Chinese investors with Australian producers, helping them with their marketing strategy and business development when setting up Partnerships and Joint Ventures, the acquisition of businesses and shares, and the import & export of products.

Victoria has had prior experience as an Administration Manager in China working with a number of organisations. These include a French Civil Engineering Company in Beijing, a Chinese-German-Italian-French Joint Venture constructing a dam and a diversified International Trading Company.
